Born into a family of teachers and academics, he attended The Ohio State University, graduating with distinction in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in physical anthropology, and in 1974 with a Master of Arts in the same subject. Unsure of his path and drawn toward law, he applied for both graduate school and law school at the same time, ultimately choosing to study law at the University of Wisconsin, where he was awarded his Juris Doctor in 1977. Mr. Bechler began his career as a partner of Jenswold, Studt, Hanson, Clark, & Kaufmann, where he practiced until 1993.
Since 1993, Mr. Bechler has continued his work as an attorney and shareholder of Murphy Desmond, S.C., a full-service practice based in Madison, Wisconsin. He is the head of the firm’s municipal law department, supervising two other full-time partners, and has been a municipal attorney for more than ten cities and towns throughout Wisconsin over the course of his career. In addition to his specialty in municipal law, Mr. Bechler also practices in estate, probate, and trust, real estate, and civil litigation cases. As an expert in the complexities of municipal law, Mr. Bechler is a former lecturer for the University of Wisconsin Law School and a content coordinator for the American Bar Association’s State and Local Government Law Section. He has been extensively published, contributing work to Administrative & Local Government News, the Journal of the American Bar Association, and the National Business Institute, among others.
Among many other honors, Mr. Bechler has been featured in Wisconsin Super Lawyers Magazine, has been named Madison Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America five times, is a two-time Fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation, and is rated “superb” by Avvo.com. He has held a variety of leadership and administrative roles for the State Bar of Wisconsin and numerous Wisconsin state regulatory committees, and remains a member of the Board of Directors of the Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society and Madison Savoyards, Ltd. Mr. Bechler attributes his success to the guidance and assistance of his mentors, describing them as “instrumental” to his progress both academically and professionally. In five years, Mr. Bechler looks forward to beginning to wind down his work with Murphy Desmond S.C. and beginning to look toward retirement and enjoying his hobbies, genealogy, running, and volleyball.
