An alumnus of Fairfield University, Mr. Sweeney continued his education at Suffolk University, earning his Juris Doctor in 1974. He began his career as a partner of the firm Silver, Webb, Sweeney & Griffen, later known as Sweeney & Griffen, where he would practice for more than four decades, building a reputation for tenacity and professionalism in litigation ranging from federal criminal suits, wrongful and accidental death proceedings, corruption and class action suits, and more. In 2013, Mr. Sweeney established the Law Offices of William J. Sweeney, Jr, where he continues to practice as managing partner, specializing in personal injury, professional malpractice, criminal defense, and probate litigation.
Throughout his career, Mr. Sweeney has been responsible for numerous multimillion-dollar settlements and has maintained an AV Preeminent Martindale-Hubbell peer rating and inclusion in Super Lawyers and the Top Lawyers in Hartford, Connecticut. He has been admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States District Court of Connecticut, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and is a longtime trial referee for the State of Connecticut and Special Master for the United States District Court of Connecticut. As a part of his commitment to the larger community, Mr. Sweeney serves as a legal incorporator for the New Britain General Hospital, the New Britain YMCA, and the Hospital for Special Care, and is the president of the Connecticut Lawyers Concern and past president of the New Britain Bar Association. In recognition of his legal accomplishments, Mr. Sweeney has been previously profiled in Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and presented with the exclusive Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
