Joseph E. Day, Shareholder and Attorney at Day Rettig Martin, P.C., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in labor law.
Since his formative years, Mr. Day had always envisioned himself becoming a lawyer. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame in 1960, along with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Georgetown University in 1963. Shortly thereafter, he was admitted to practice law in the state of Iowa, as well as before the Iowa District Court, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
Since 1968, Mr. Day has been a shareholder in the Cedar Rapids firm of Day Rettig Martin, P.C., where he concentrates his practice on labor law, employee benefits, and employment law. Prior to entering private practice, he served as a staff attorney in the national office of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C. Earlier, Mr. Day served as part-time corporate counsel for the City of Cedar Rapids from 1968 to 1975, with urban renewal as his primary responsibility. He recalls his most notable achievement was establishing a number of multi-employer health funds.
To remain abreast of his industry, Mr. Day maintains membership with the Employee Benefits Committee of the Labor Section of the American Bar Association and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. He attributes his success to good fortune and having been able to attend fine educational institutions, as well as being persistent in the pursuit of representing clients. Looking toward the future, Mr. Day hopes to continue practicing law for as long as he is able.
