Widely recognized as one of the foremost experts in Canadian antitrust and competition law, Mr. Goldman has dedicated more than four decades of practice to representing clients from the NHL and Microsoft Corporation to Spectra Energy Corporation and 7-Eleven. Mr. Goldman is a gold-medal Bachelor of Laws graduate from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School, and completed a Master of Laws at Harvard Law School before accepting a clerkship for the Honorable Justice Wishart Spence of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1975. He began his career as an associate of Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, rising to partner over the course of his ten years with the firm.
In 1986, Mr. Goldman was named Queen’s Counsel, the Director of Investigation and Research and Head of the Canadian Competition Bureau, firmly establishing his reputation as an innovator in competition policy and setting the stage for several other wide-ranging appointments, including service as Canada’s G7 Plenary Head and his current position on the NAFTA Chapter 19 Binational Panels Roster. Through the 1990s, Mr. Goldman was a senior partner in the Competition Law and Trade Practices Group of Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, LLP, where he acted as special counsel to the Attorney General of Canada on a landmark case on the validity of Section 45 of the Competition Act. After stepping down from Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, Mr. Goldman went on to chair the Competition, Antitrust, & Foreign Investment groups of both Blake, Cassels, & Graydon and Goodmans LLP.
As of 2020, Mr. Goldman continues his work as the principal of The Law Office of Calvin Coldman, Q.C., and remains co-chair of the Competition, Antitrust, & Foreign Investment Group at Goodmans, LLP. He emphasizes that the key to his success is staying at the forefront of evolutions in his practice, and he is currently involved in antitrust actions governing the future of competition laws affecting Facebook and Google. Mr. Goldman is the former editor of the Foreign Investment Review and Foreign Investment Regulation Review and has been extensively published and interviewed. He is the recipient of dozens of international awards and accolades for his contributions to the future of competition law and is listed by Chambers Global, Chambers Canada, and the Best Lawyers in Canada lists for 2021. Mr. Goldman is active in the International Chamber of Commerce, the Law Society of Ontario, both the Canadian and American Bar Association, and the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development.
