Martin D. Beirne, Senior Partner at Akerman LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in litigation.
Having accrued 50 years of professional experience in the legal field, Mr. Beirne currently excels as a senior partner at Akerman LLP, where he has specialized in corporate litigation and defense for the energy, pharmaceutical, and automotive industries. Earlier, he had also gained exceptional expertise as the chairman of Beirne, Maynard, and Parsons from 1985 to 2016 and as a partner at Fulbright & Jaworski from 1971 to 1985. To prepare him for his career in law, Mr. Beirne attained a Bachelor of Arts in English from Spring Hill College in 1966 and later a Doctor of Jurisprudence, with honors, from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1969.
Reflecting on his experience in the field, Mr. Beirne cites his time as lead counsel for General Motors in a three-year litigation campaign to stop the counterfeiting of motor vehicle parts as a career highlight. With this sentiment, he helped draft and implement anti-counterfeiting statutes and enforcement procedures in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, he represented Conoco Phillips when another company challenged its offshore oil and gas concession granted by the government of East Timor. Mr. Beirne attributes his success to his two mentors, Blake Tartt and Sam Hood, both of whom were inspirational to him.
Highly regarded amongst his professional community, Mr. Beirne was the recipient of the Lion of the Texas Bar Award in 2016, as well as recognized as a “Lion of the Texas Bar” in the Texas Lawbook. He has been named one of the three “Top Drawer Litigators” in the U.S. by the Corporate Legal Times, a “Leader in Texas” by Chambers USA, and has been profiled by the Best Lawyers in America and Texas Super Lawyers. Most notably, Mr. Beirne has also co-authored various works for the Texas Lawyer, Practical Law, and Corporate Counsel and been a panelist at Legaltech West Coast.
A fellow and board member of the American Bar Foundation, Mr. Beirne has been commissioner of the Texas Access to Justice Commission and contributed to various foundations. He also maintains affiliation with the American Bar Association, Texas Bar Association, Houston Bar Association, American Law Institute, and the Institute for Transnational Arbitration. To attest to his legacy, Mr. Beirne can also be found in editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Notably, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971.
