Marshall Howard Tanick, Partner at Meyer, Njus, Tanick, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in civil litigation.
During his undergraduate years at the University of Minnesota, Mr. Tanick became intrigued by journalism and legal matters and was introduced to a combination of his interests by a professor, the field of media law. He received a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 and went on to attain a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Stanford University in 1973. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Tanick was admitted to practice in the states of Minnesota and California, as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth, Seventh and Third Circuits. Today, he flourishes as a partner of Meyer, Njus, Tanick, where he has specialized in general civil litigation, constitutional law and employment since 2018.
In the early years of his career, Mr. Tanick was a law clerk to a presiding justice of the U.S. District Court in Minneapolis for one year until 1974. He went on to serve as an associate at Robins, Davis & Lyons from 1974 to 1976 before becoming a partner at Tanick & Heins, P.A., where he remained until 1989. Likewise, Mr. Tanick had also showed his legal prowess as a partner of Mansfield & Tanick from 1989 to 2012 and Hellmuth & Johnson from 2012 to 2017. Alongside his primary roles, he was also a professor of construction, real estate and media law at the University of Minnesota and a professor of constitutional law at the William Mitchell College of Law.
Finding great success throughout the course of his career, Mr. Tanick has been the recipient of various awards and accolades. Named to the Top 100 Attorneys in Minnesota, he was honored as Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer Magazine in 2019. In addition, Mr. Tanick received the First Amendment Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, as well as the Author’s Award from the Minnesota Bar Association. Regarded as an Alumni of Notable Distinction to his alma mater and Citizen of the Year by his Rotary Club, he was also honored as an Unsung Hero by the St. Paul Press. He has also been editor of the Hennepin Lawyer Magazine.
Mr. Tanick’s career highlight has been his involvement in a number of high profile cases that have set some standards in the law. He was not always successful in them, but he managed to achieve great stride in advancing the law for individuals and claimants. He also had been fortunate enough to have litigated First Amendment, freedom of press and freedom of speech cases. To attest to his legacy, Mr. Tanick can also be found in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
