Since 1980, Mr. Togut has been recognized as a senior member of Togut, Segal & Segal LLP, recognized as the oldest and one of the most premier boutique bankruptcy law firms in the United States. As a restructuring attorney and bankruptcy specialist, he has gained significant recognition for his expertise in corporate reorganization and creditors’ rights. Alongside his primary responsibilities, he has also been a senior advisor on all cases at the firm by mentoring the staff attorneys. Throughout his illustrious career, he has successfully served as a court-approved counsel and has won a number of prominent cases, including cases for General Motors, Chrysler Automotive, Enron, American Airlines, Latam Airlines and Frontier Airlines, among others. He also recently was appointed to represent Westinghouse, Pacific Drilling and Toisa Shopping as counsel.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Togut served Conrad Duberstein for one summer while working toward his law degree, receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Saint John’s University in 1974. He also draws upon a Bachelor of Science in economics, with honors, from New York University in 1971. Mr. Togut has been admitted to practice law in the State of New York, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.
A frequent speaker and lecturer across the nation through the American Bar Association and American Bankruptcy Institute, Mr. Togut has also taught courses at Harvard Law School and has contributed a plethora of articles to Forbes Magazine the Norton Bankruptcy Law Advisor and the ABI Journal, among other prominent journals and books. Civically engaged as well, he has sat on the board of the Boston Symphony, the Williamstown Theater Festival and the Palm Beach Opera, all while chairing the board of the Berkshire International Film Festival for a decade.
To remain abreast of developments in the field, Mr. Togut is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and the International Insolvency Institute, as well as a member of the New York City Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Bankruptcy Lawyers of the Bar Association of New York, where he served as past president. He also excelled as co-chair of the Commission of the American Bankruptcy Institute.
To attest to his success, Mr. Togut received a Leadership Award from the New York Institute of Credit and the Professor Lawrence P. King Award from the UJA Bankruptcy Division. Likewise, he has been honored in myriad esteemed publications, such as being named a New York Super Lawyer and Leading Lawyer by Chambers USA. Profiled extensively in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, he has been quoted in articles from Bloomberg’s website and featured on Bloomberg TV regarding his areas of expertise in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
