From watching his father excel as a lawyer, Mr. Richman desired to serve his community in a similar fashion. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Grinnell College in Iowa in 1969 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Boston University in 1975. Shortly thereafter, he was admitted to practice in the state of Massachusetts and Hawaii, as well as before the U.S. District Courts for Massachusetts and Hawaii, U.S. Supreme Court and U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. At the start of his career, Mr. Richman served as a law clerk and attorney for Richman & Perenyi between 1973 and 1977. Until 1982, he worked out of private practice in Provincetown, where he settled a U.S. code lawsuit against the police department of Provincetown without going to court.
Upon his relocation to Hawaii, Mr. Richman has flourished as a lawyer, arbitrator and mediator for Joel Richman Attorney at Law since 1985. Specializing in real estate law, he concentrates on condominium and subdivision formation, transaction representation, contract drafting and negotiation and is AV-Preeminent Rated by Martindale-Hubbell. Alongside his primary work, Mr. Richman has served as founder and president of the Jewish Congregation of Maui and the Maui Kite-Surfing Community, president of the Pacific Primate Center and the Kalama School Band Boosters and vice president of the Haiku Community Association. In his spare time, he enjoys kitesurfing, windsurfing and t’ai chi.
