Steven Altus Felsenthal, Senior Partner at Sugar, Felsenthal, Grais & Helsinger LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in tax and estate planning.
Upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois in 1971, Mr. Felsenthal went on to obtain a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard University in 1974. Shortly thereafter, he was admitted to practice in Illinois and Michigan, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, U.S. Court of Claims, U.S. Tax Court and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Mr. Felsenthal commenced his career as an associate for Levenfeld, Kanter, Baskes & Lippitz in 1974, going on to serve as a partner at Levenfeld & Kanter and for Levenfeld, Eisenberg, Janger, Glassberg & Lippitz between 1978 and 1984. Rising to a senior partner, he worked for Sugar, Friedberg & Felsenthal from 1984 to 2008 and for Sugar & Felsenthal LLP from 2008 to 2011. Notably, since 2011, Mr. Felsenthal has served as a senior partner and executive committee member to Sugar, Felsenthal, Grais & Helsinger LLP in Chicago. In his role, he advises business owners, executives and closely held companies in the areas of income tax planning and controversies, sales and acquisitions, debt restructuring, estate planning, strategic planning and real estate transactions.
Renowned for his expertise in law, Mr. Felsenthal is Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Rated and was listed in Chicago’s Top Rated Lawyers for Business and Commercial in 2012. He was also selected for inclusion in Illinois Super Lawyers from 2005 to 2007 and again from 2009 to 2012, as well as listed within Leading Lawyers in multiple areas from 2012 to 2018. Presently, Mr. Felsenthal holds membership with the American Bar Association, Illinois Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, Chicago Council Lawyers, Chicago Estate Planning Council, Harvard Law Society Illinois, Standard Club, Harvard Club of Chicago, Harvard Club of New York, Economic Club of Chicago and Phi Beta Kappa. In his spare time, he enjoys music and theater.
