Michael Huneke, Partner at Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in anti-corruption law and litigation.

Mr. Huenke had always looked up to his uncle who was a lawyer, who later became a huge career mentor for him. In the sixth grade, he was able to shadow his uncle and knew from then on that he would become a lawyer. Mr. Huenke earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics and government from the University of Virginia in 2002. He then received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard University Law School in 2005. Finding his niche in anti-corruption law and white-collar defense, the time of which he came out of law school coincided with the decision by the U.S. Department of Justice to begin aggressively enforcing the U.S. FCPA anti-bribery law. This became a huge area of practice for law firms and consulting companies. Mr. Huenke believes he was lucky, as far as timing is concerned, because this area of law really became a sustainable practice area that he has deeply enjoyed.

Mr. Huneke began his career in 2006 as a law clerk for the Honorable Henry Coke Morgan, Jr., remaining for one year. From 2005 to 2010, he was an associate with White & Case LLP. He joined Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP in 2010, starting out as an associate and in 2016, he became a partner, a position he holds to this day. Mr. Huneke’s greatest accomplishment would be his client’s achievements, as he believes they are there just to help the clients. Professionally, he is most proud of is working with his co-authors, Kevin T. Abikoff and John F. Wood, on “Anti-Corruption Law and Compliance: Guide to the FCPA and Beyond (Litigation and White-Collar Crime)” in 2014. The work is on what he considers to be a first-class legal treatise on anti-corruption law with a focus on the U.S. but with an increased focus on the emerging anti-corruption enforcement jurisdiction as they have expanded it over time. He recalls it as a huge undertaking to research and draft and he is very grateful that his firm gave them the opportunity to do it. As a testament to his success, Mr. Huneke was named a Recommended Lawyer in Compliance by Legal 500 from 2018 to 2020. He has also been named a Five-Star Wealth Manager three times and named a Washington, D.C. Super Lawyer and Rising Star in 2014 and 2015.
