It was not until Ms. Tatum neared toward the end of her undergraduate education that she decided to pursue a career in law. Backed by a Bachelor of Arts in government from Smith College, she enrolled at the Santa Clara School of Law. By 1994, Ms. Tatum attained a Doctor of Jurisprudence. In the years that followed, she became certified to practice in the state of Texas, as well as before the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for Armed Forces.

In 2004, Ms. Tatum commenced her career as a member of the Underwriter’s Counsel. She remains in this role today alongside her more recent venture as president of LM Tatum, PLLC. Earlier, from 2008 until 2012, she broached the educational sector of her industry as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, though she ultimately felt better suited elsewhere in her field. Over the years, Ms. Tatum has shared her professional insights by contributing articles to various professional journals and speaking at multiple industry conferences. She maintains affiliation with several organizations in her field as well. These include the American Bar Association, the Texas Access to Justice Foundation and the National Bar Association, among others.

Reflecting on her abundant accomplishments, Ms. Tatum attributes her success to focus and hard work. In light of her various achievements, she earned the Civics Award from Women That Soar in 2014. Likewise, she has been listed among The History Makers, Super Lawyers and The Power List, as well as to D Mars 2014 Top 50 Black Attorneys. In the coming years, Ms. Tatum hopes to give herself more time to rest. However, she does want to continue her work at a comfortable pace. She additionally wants to build a mediation practice and see her work become more meaningful to her clients and the community she serves.
