Upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in 1968, Mr. Whitehead went on to obtain a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan in 1975. Admitted to practice in the states of Washington and Alaska, he is also certified to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Western and Eastern Districts of Washington, U.S. District Court of Alaska, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Whitehead commenced his career as an associate of LeGros, Buchanan, Paul & Madden in 1975, remaining until 1979. For 13 years, he excelled as a director and officer of LeGros, Buchanan, Paul & Whitehead before serving as a partner of McGee, Reno & Whitehead for one year in 1993. Subsequently, he joined Holmes, Weddle & Barcott as of counsel from 1993 to 1997 and as a shareholder for 10 years until 2007. Since 2008, Mr. Whitehead has served as the owner and member of the Law Office of James F. Whitehead, PLLC, where he specializes in maritime law and personal injury.
Holding an AV Rating from Martindale Hubbell for more than 25 years, Mr. Whitehead was also listed as one of Washington’s Best Lawyers and rated “Superb” by AVVO. Likewise, he was named one of Seattle’s top 10 admiralty lawyers by CEO Magazine and Seattle Met Magazine, among other honors. Mr. Whitehead has performed exceptionally in all areas of his industry, as he volunteered to serve as a judge of numerous law school and undergraduate moot court competitions and has authored numerous articles on maritime law in local journals. Presently, he holds membership with the Washington State and Alaska Bar Associations and the Maritime Law Association of the United States, of which he served on the board from 2000 to 2003. Notably, he served with the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973. To attest to his legacy, Mr. Whitehead can also be found in editions of Who’s Who In Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who in the World. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis and golf, boating and birding.
