Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics, magna cum laude, from Boston College in 1981, Mr. Powers originally intended to pursue a career in banking. However, due to the poor economy, he went on to obtain a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in 1984. Shortly thereafter, he was admitted to practice law in Massachusetts, as well as before the United States Supreme Court and First Circuit Court of Appeals. For the past 36 years, Mr. Powers has excelled as a managing partner of Melick & Porter in Boston, Massachusetts, where he specializes in the areas of appellate litigation, employment litigation, entertainment and sports law, general and professional liability, insurance coverage and liquor liability.

Finding great success throughout the course of his career, Mr. Powers has been consistently honored by Massachusetts Super Lawyers, National Super Lawyers, New England Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America. A fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, he was named Lawyer of the Year in Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly in 2012. Mr. Powers attributes his success perseverance and resilience, as well as to his father for guiding him to take on a career that he loved. Presently, he maintains affiliation with the Boston Bar Association, Defense Research Institute and Massachusetts Bar Association. In addition to his primary role, Mr. Powers has been involved with Discovering Justice since 2011 and has served as school board president to the St. Mary School since 2010. In five years’ time, he plans to continue practicing at his firm for years to come, while also making the firm a great place for young attorneys to grow. He sees the next few years as “transition years.”
