Thomas MJ Lavigne, JD, Managing Partner at Cannabis Counsel Law Firm, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cannabis law.

A student at Maharishi International University in 1983, Mr. Lavigne went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in English from Wayne State University in 1985. Inspired to further his professional opportunities, he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Michigan State University College of Law in 1989. Shortly thereafter, he was admitted to practice law in Michigan, Hawaii and North Carolina, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, District of Hawaii, Eastern and Central Districts of North Carolina and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth, Fourth and Ninth Circuits.

Upon reading Jack Harer’s book, “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” as a young lawyer in Hawaii, Mr. Lavigne soon commenced his cannabis activism and began accepting cabanas criminal defense cases. In 1989, he joined the Law Offices of Anthony P. Locrocchio in Hawaii, remaining until 1995. He went on to serve as a lawyer for Riecker, Van Dam, Barker & Black in Michigan from 1998 to 2000 and as general counsel and software executive to IDEACore from 2000 to 2011. Since 2010, he has excelled as the managing partner of Cannabis Counsel Law Firm, in which he provides legal services to cannabis businesses pursuing commercial licenses under the Michigan Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act. Notably, in 2018, Mr. Lavigne accepted the Pioneers Award from the State Bar of Michigan for his involvement in legalizing marijuana.

Presently, Mr. Lavigne maintains membership with the State Bar of Michigan Marijuana Law Section Leadership Council and State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly. In addition, he has written 12 articles for Marijuana Trade Magazine, as well as eight articles for the State Bar of Michigan. Reflecting on his career, he attributes his success to the unconditional love of his parents, which gave him a sense of stability and the head start he needed to overcome struggle and doubt. Mr. Lavigne has served as the secretary of the board of directors for MiLegalize since 2015 and was previously involved with the Detroit Boat Club Rowing Crew. A gifted rower, he was granted a Gold Medal from the National Champion Oarsman in 1983. In five years’ time, Mr. Lavigne aims to grow Cannabis Counsel Law Firm in size and expand to offices out of state. He plans to continue living by his motto, “Don’t entertain negativity.”
