Subsequently, Mr. Bekman became licensed to practice law in the state of Maryland, as well as before the U.S. District Court of Maryland and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Likewise, he became certified by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys in 2002 and was the first lawyer certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in Maryland as a civil trial specialist in 1980.

Notably, Mr. Bekman has been a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers since 1993, a distinguished honor achieved by less than one percent of the nation’s lawyers. In the 1997-98 year, he served as president of the Maryland State Bar Association. He was the first plaintiff’s attorney ever to hold that position for the 19,000-member organization. In addition, he had served the association as chairman of the correctional reform section, chairman of negligence insurance and worker’s compensation section, and a member of the board of governors. Likewise, Mr. Bekman was president of the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association in 1986 and president of the Baltimore City Bar Association for 1993-1994, as well as chairman of its young lawyer’s section for 1981-1982. He was also a member of the board of governors for the Federal Bar Association in 1978.
