Mr. Matouk is one of Egypt’s top lawyers and a founding partner of the full-service international legal firm, Matouk Bassiouny. He achieved a Bachelor of Arts in literary theory and international relations from Yale University and went on to earn a Doctor of Jurisprudence, with honors, from George Washington University in 1997, fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming an attorney. While in law school, Mr. Matouk realized the need for professional services firms throughout the Middle East and North Africa to support foreign investment and economic development in the region. After his graduation, he resolved to open a firm in Egypt.

In 2005, Mr. Matouk established Matouk Bassiouny, where he continues to practice as head of the firm’s dispute resolution practice. Notably, he has argued cases in defense of major international manufacturers conducting business in Egypt and was also instrumental in establishing Uber’s Egyptian operations. Likewise, he provides pro bono work to clients across industry sectors. Widely recognized as an authority on Egyptian business law, Mr. Matouk has been named as one of the International Financial Law Review’s Leading Lawyers, as well as an Eminent Practitioner and Leading Individual in Dispute Resolution by Chambers Global.

Looking back on his career trajectory, Mr. Matouk is proud to have built a major law firm in a challenging environment. He attributes his success to his drive, emphasis on building strong client relationships and willingness to take risks. He counsels emerging professionals not to feel limited by industry pressures or the need to follow a traditional career path but rather emphasizes finding their own niche. He is active in numerous professional organizations, including the International Bar Association, the American Chamber of Commerce and sits on the ICC Arab Arbitration Group Advisory Board. In the coming years, Mr. Matouk looks forward to expanding Matouk Bassiouny to include additional regional offices and exploring the possibility of a United States branch.
