David L. Deratzian, Esq., Partner at Hahalis & Kounoupis, P.C., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in employment law.

By high school, Mr. Deratzian knew he wanted to become a lawyer. From being exposed to the show “Perry Mason,” he grew a deep interest in law and his mother told him his argumentative nature would serve him well as a lawyer, which stuck with him. Today, he is the only lawyer in the family. Mr. Deratzian earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, theatre and political science from the State University of New York College at Potsdam in 1984. He then went on to receive a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the James E. Beasley School of Law at Temple University in 1987.

Mr. Deratzian began his career as an attorney in 1987 at the Law Office of Albert Deutsch, remaining until 1995. Since 1996, he has been a partner at Hagalis & Kounoupis, P.C., where he specializes in labor and employment law. In his legal career, he has been most proud of the work he contributed to under the American Disabilities Act and, in particular, his involvement with the 2008 amendments that restored the rights that an unfortunate trio of Supreme Court cases had taken away. In his spare time, he has been a stage director, musical director and owner of 1880 Theatricals. In 2012, he was the musical director of Willow Manor Plays.

Giving back to his community, Mr. Deratzian volunteers for Philadelphia Lawyers for the Arts. He was a chairman of the Disability Right Section of the National Employment Lawyers Association from 2001 to 2008 and was on the Markup Committee of the American with Disabilities Amendment Act from 2008 to 2009. As a testament to his success, Mr. Deratzian has been listed in Super Lawyers since 2008, as well as in Best Lawyers in America and Top Attorneys in Pennsylvania. He has also been inducted as a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association and the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association.
