Natalma (Tami) McKnew, J.D., Attorney and Partner at Fox Rothschild, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in franchising and intellectual property law.
Ms. McKnew earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1971 and went on to achieve a Master of Arts in linguistics and literature from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1973. By the late 1970s, she was living in Boston with her husband, a doctoral candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and working at Massachusetts General Hospital. Deciding to return to academia, a friend suggested Ms. McKnew would enjoy the legal profession, and so she took the LSAT and scored significantly higher than expected. Notably, she obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Northeastern University School of Law in 1978 and is now certified to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and Fourth Circuit, as well as in South Carolina.
A renowned attorney and partner for Fox Rothschild LLP in Greenville, South Carolina, Ms. McKnew concentrates her practice in the areas of franchising, dealerships, antitrust and intellectual property. In addition, she has served as a partner and pro bono supervisor with Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP since 2018. Previously, Ms. McKnew was a managing partner at Leatherwood Walker Todd & Mann, P.C. from 1995 to 2000, having served the firm as an attorney in franchising, intellectual property, antitrust, and complex litigation since 1978. She attributes the success of her long-standing legal career to a little bit of luck and good genes, as she recalls her father was a brilliant and influential man. In five years’ time, she hopes to be serving of counsel to a firm on a part-time basis.
Honored with myriad accolades throughout her career, Ms. McKnew holds a Top AV Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell and has been named to Best Lawyers in America for Franchise Law in South Carolina by Best Lawyers for more than 11 years. Additionally, she is featured among the Franchise Times 2020 Legal Eagles, Greenville Business Magazine’s 2019, 2018, and 2017 Legal Elite and Who’s Who 2018 Legal Franchise Lawyers. She has also been listed to South Carolina Lawyers for Franchise/Dealership from 2012 to 2020 and received South Carolina Lawyers Weekly’s Leadership in Law Award in 2012. Moreover, Ms. McKnew has been notably presented with a Women Making History Award, a Hearts in the Arts Award, and the 2019 American Bar Association Forum on Franchising Diversity Award.
Presently, Ms. McKnew holds membership with the American Bar Association’s Antitrust, Litigation, and Intellectual Property Sections and the Forum on Franchising’s Governing Committee. She also maintains affiliation with the American Board of Trial Advocate, American Intellectual Property Law Association, International Franchise Association’s Legislative Committee, and Priester Foundation. A founding board member of the South Carolina Women Lawyer’s Association and the Institute for Child Success, Ms. McKnew also sits on the board for the South Carolina Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. Notably, she serves as president and a board member of United Way of Greenville County.
