William Edward Thomson Jr., Chair at Brooks Kushman, P.C., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in intellectual property law.

Growing up, Mr. Thomson always wanted to be a lawyer. During his time at Bucknell University, he was informed of opportunities to practice intellectual property law, which combined his interests in law and engineering, and he became determined to pursue that as his career. Mr. Thomson earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Bucknell University in 1957. He then received a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University in 1963. Upon completion of his degree, he was admitted to practice law in the states of Virginia, Ohio, and California. Moreover, he was certified by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

While with Lyon & Lyon in Los Angeles, Mr. Thomson represented Vestar, Inc., which was founded based on liposome technology invented by a scientist at Caltech. Vestar was sued for patent infringement by a company that was not using the technology in question but acquired the patent for it from a company based in Europe for the sole purpose of suing Vestar. He served as lead counsel for Vestar in the litigation and won the case. His hard work allowed Vestar to remain in business. Reflecting on his career, Mr. Thomson considers that case to be some of his best work. Since 2009, he has been an attorney with the Los Angeles Office of Brooks Kushman, P.C., serving as chair since 2013. He has also devoted time to the City of Pasadena as a vice-mayor from 1986 until 1988 and as a member of the Pasadena City Council from 1981 until 1997. Since 1974, Mr. Thomson has been a member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association.

As a testament to his success, Mr. Thomson received an Arts Merit Award from the Pasadena Committee Arts Center. He has been inducted as a member of the American Bar Association, California Bar Association, Los Angeles County Bar Association, and he is an officer and member of the Judge Paul Michel I.P American Inn of Court. Mr. Thomson is also listed in the 22nd and 23rd editions of Who’s Who in the West. Looking toward the future, he wants to continue to practice intellectual property law and be in charge of the Los Angeles Office of Brooks Kushman, P.C. He will also continue to be active in civic matters in Pasadena and throughout California.
