Michael A. Ross, BA, MSc, JD, Consultant at Blaqwell Legal Consulting, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements and leadership.
Mr. Ross majored in English literature when he was an undergraduate. At the time, he was unsure whether to attend law school or business school after graduating. The law boards came up before the business school boards, and he did very well on the law boards, which solidified his decision to pursue a career in law. Interested in international studies, he then spent a year in London, going on to hold a job traineeship in the Netherlands through AIESEC. A not-for-profit, AIESEC established programs on college campuses worldwide to help students get traineeships in other countries. Later, when he was at Shearman & Sterling, he became the partner in charge of the AIESEC pro bono relationship and served on its US Board from 1979 until 1992. In early 1993, he left Shearman to go in house at Citicorp, now Citigroup. In 2009, he rejoined the AIESEC Board and served until 2017.
Mr. Ross earned a Bachelor of Arts from Franklin & Marshall College in 1963, a Juris Doctorate from Columbia University in 1966 and a Master of Science in International Law from the London School of Economics in 1967. He was an associate and then a partner at Shearman & Sterling from 1967 until 1993. He then went in house at Citicorp (now Citigroup) and was deputy general counsel of the holding company from 1993-2001, general counsel of Citibank from 1998-2003 and general counsel of Citigroup International from 2002-2003.
Among the many matters that Mr. Ross has participated in over a legal career of more than 50 years some stick out most in his memory. In 1975, the Congo was in the midst of a civil war and Citi had financed a cobalt and copper mining project in the interior of the country. The loan was in trouble. Mr. Ross helped Citi bring a law suit against the US Export-Import Bank that resulted in a favorable settlement. In the early 80’s, Mr. Ross represented Citi in putting together a multi-billion dollar acquisition financing for Dome Petroleum, then Canada’s largest company. A few months later, Dome missed an interest payment. Mr. Ross spent the next 2 years negotiating a resolution with the major Canadian banks and the Canadian government. The lenders in the Citi syndicate had a mortgage on valuable oil and gas assets and came out whole. While in house at Citi, Mr. Ross also was involved in the Lloyds restructuring, the collapse of Baring Bros., the Drexel bankruptcy and Citi’s acquisition of Banamax.
After his time with Citi, Mr. Ross became Counsel at Wilmer Hale, where he served in 2004 and 2005. Since 2006, he has been a Consultant with Blaqwell Legal Consulting and, since 2007, also an advisor to Clutch Group (and, after it acquisition by Morae Global) a consultant for Morae Global.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Ross has been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in Emerging Leaders, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in America.
