Stephen J. Orens, JD, Of-Counsel at McMillan Metro, P.C., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in development approval and permitting processes.
Mr. Orens became involved in his profession because his father and brother were both lawyers, who practiced in New York. He decided that he wanted to go to law school during his senior year of college, so he took the LSAT. He then applied and got the position as a law clerk to a judge, which resulted in him, becoming involved in municipal law. Mr. Orens earned a Bachelor of Arts from Hofstra University in 1965. He then received a Juris Doctorate from American University in 1968. Upon completion of his degrees, Mr. Orens was admitted to practice law in the state of Maryland, The District of Columbia, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Orsen’s career highlight was when he was in the beginning of his career, where he was representing top agencies such as the Office of Consumer Affairs, Office of Landlord-Tenant Affairs, the Commission for Women, the Department of Pennant Services, and a lot of litigation services in the area, a number of the cases were decided by Maryland Court of Appeals and have become landmark zoning cases in Maryland law. Mr. Orens began his career as a legal land-use lawyer with Cramwell Lawyers and then he became a partner with Wilks, Frederick & Lane Law Firm. In 2016, he became an attorney at Miles & Stockbridge Law Firm, where he remained until 2015. Since 2015, he has been of counsel with McMillian Metro PC. He also spent time as a senior assistant attorney in Montgomery County, an administrative hearing examiner and an adjunct assistant professor of law with American University.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Orens received the Joseph C. Rodgers Award for Outstanding Associate Member by MNCBIA in 2003, the Rosemary Colston Award for Outstanding Service and Leadership from The Treatment and Learning Centers of Montgomery County in 1993 and 2011 and was AV Preeminent Rated by Martindale-Hubbell in 2016. He was also inducted as a member of the Legal Action Network for Development Strategies, National Association of Home Builders, and Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. He is also a life director of the Maryland Building Industry Association and is a past chair and member of the State and Local Government Law Section of the Maryland State Bar Association.
