Alan S. Mark, JD, LLM, Principal at Paley Rothman, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in corporate, commercial and real estate finance matters.
Mr. Mark said he wanted to teach because of self-interest and it helped him become a good public speaker. He believes when you teach, you learn more than you teach and he brought a practical view of law especially in a business setting and the economic forces at play to his students. Mr. Mark was originally interested in politics, which is why he went to law school in Washington, D.C. and he quickly realized politics is not what he wanted to do. Early on in law school, he discovered he had an interest in business and finance and this propelled him to continue with his law degree. T field of law was so attractive to him because he came from a family of professionals and decided that he didn’t want to be a doctor and the legal profession seemed interesting, and he enjoyed law school. Mr. Mark earned a Bachelor of Arts from New York University in 1969. He then received a Juris Doctorate cum laude from American University Washington College of Law in 1973. From there, he earned a Master of Laws in taxation from The George Washington University in 1979.
In the Washington D.C. area where he practices, there is a concentration of biotechnology companies. He was fortunate enough to get involved on the ground floor with these major companies and was able to assist and counsel them in connection with the development of critical facilities, laboratories, manufacturing facilities and office facilities for Human Genome Sciences and Metamune. He worked on very significant billion-dollar financing arrangements for some of these companies, which are career highlight deals. He also really loved teaching and he is proud of the fact that his career is over 48 years now. Mr. Mark started out as a lawyer with Lobel, Nobbins & Lamonte in 1973, remaining until 1978. In 1978, he took an 11-month position with Nathan & Mause before joining Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson as a partner in 1979, staying until 1985. In 1986, he became a partner with Finley, Kumble, Wagner at al for two years and then became a partner with Perito & Dubuc until 1991. Since 1991, he has been a senior counsel and principal of Paley, Rothman Goldstein, Rosenberg & Cooper Chtd. From 1992 to 2018, he was an adjunct professor of law at American University Washington College of Law and from 1988 to 1998, he was an adjunct professor with Georgetown Law School. As a testament to his success, Mr. Mark has been named Best Lawyers in American by U.S. News and Best Lawyers. He has been inducted as a member of the American Bar Association and is a member of the advisory board of Truist and of the strategic planning board of the Children’s Nation Medical Center. HE is also listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in America.
