At the firm, Mr. Shelton specializes in probate estate and will, trust, and tax litigation. Prior to this role, he had served Godwin Carlton & Maxwell as a director and associate from 1982 to 1987, as well as secretary, treasurer, and member of the board of directors and executive committee from 1987 to 2000. He gained early experience in his career as an associate for Kelly D. McGehee, Inc. from 1980 to 1982 and as an attorney for the IRS in Wichita and Dallas between 1973 and 1980, which he describes as a valuable experience opening him to the private sector. Additionally, he was the chief accountant for Fleming Co.’s Topeka Division from 1971 to 1973.
Mr. Shelton received an Associate of Arts from Butler Community College in 1968 and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Washburn University in 1970. Earning his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1973, he soon was certified to practice in Texas, Kansas, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. District Court of Kansas and U.S. District Court of the Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Districts of Texas. To add to his legal expertise, he is certified in estate planning and holds a Probate Texas Board Legal Specialization. Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Shelton has held membership with the Dallas Bar Association, Tarrant County Bar Association, Southwestern Legal Foundation, Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and Texas Bar Association. Mr. Shelton credits the unflinching support of his wife for his enduring success. To attest to his legacy, he is also listed within the eighth edition of Who’s Who in American Law.
