Mr. McAndrews, son of renowned real estate lawyer James P. McAndrews, attended Georgetown University to complete his undergraduate studies. In 1979, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service. He remained at the university and, four years later, earned a Juris Doctor. In 1983, he was hired as an attorney for the Godard, West, and Adelman law firm in Virginia. He remained there until 1992, when he relocated to the Alexandria City Attorney Office. He served as an assistant city attorney until 2017, when he was promoted to senior assistant city attorney. He continues to hold that title today. His areas of practice include civil litigation, municipal law and mental health law.
Mr. McAndrews viewed the law as a vehicle for social service. While his first position at a private law firm was satisfying, he felt much better suited for work in the public sector, and transitioned to working for the city. He enjoys working for and on behalf of the citizens of Alexandria. He attributes his success to his thorough attention to detail and strong work ethic. In the future, he looks forward to continuing to serve the people of Alexandria.
In 2018, Mr. McAndrews was awarded the A. Robert Cherin Award from the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, in recognition of his many accomplishments in the fields of law and public service. Outside of his legal endeavors, he serves on the Pastoral Council and the Tithing Allocation Committee for St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Vienna, Virginia. He additionally enjoys kayaking, bike riding, and spending time with his family at the beach.
