Eleanor Alter, Partner at Alter, Wolff & Foley, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in family law.
A graduate of the University of Michigan, Ms. Alter received a Bachelor of Arts with honors in 1960. The following year, she completed postgraduate coursework at Harvard University in 1961, before earning a Bachelor of Laws from Columbia Law School in 1964. Subsequently, she admitted to practice law in New York in 1965, while working as an attorney for the Office of the General Counsel of the Insurance Department of the State of New York between 1964 and 1966. Ms. Alter later joined Miller & Carlson in New York City as an associate for two years, before contributing as an associate with Marshall, Bratter, Greene, Allison & Tucker, from 1968 to 1974. She further progressed to a partner with the aforementioned law firm until her departure in 1982. Moreover, Ms. Alter excelled as a partner with Roseman & Colin for 15 years, later assuming employment with Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP until 2016. She is currently a partner with Alter, Wolff & Foley, a position that she has held since it’s founding in 2016.
In addition to working as a lawyer, Ms. Alter also flourished as an adjunct professor at the University of Chicago Law School and New York University Law School between 1983 and 1993. A respected voice in the field, she contributed to the board of editors for the New York Law Journal for nearly 30 years. For her accomplishments in the field, she has been the recipient of awards from the American Academy of Matrimonial Law and the New York State Bar. To remain aware of changes in the legal field, Ms. Alter maintains a professional relationship with the American Law Institute, the American College of Family Trial Lawyers, Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and the American Academy Matrimonial Lawyers, among others.
