John P. Dacey, Esq., Senior Shareholder at Bergman Dacey Goldsmith, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in construction law and litigation.
Known as Dean of California Construction Bar when it comes to education by his peers, Mr. Dacey is backed by more than 30 years of professional experience in law. As the first lawyer in his family, Mr. Dacey admits he fell into the field simply by a fascination he always held. Today, his practice focuses on construction, real property, business, fraud, environmental and insurance-related litigation. Mr. Dacey received a BS from Ramapo College of New Jersey and went on to obtain a JD from the Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles in 1988, and admitted to the California Bar that same year. For the last 20 years, he has served as a senior shareholder at Bergman Dacey Goldsmith in Los Angeles. He works by the motto, “Fair, firm, and responsible in all efforts.”
Prior to his current role, Mr. Dacey served the Los Angeles Community College District, the largest community college district in the nation, as lead construction counsel from 2013 to 2018 and as chairman of the Independent Citizen’s Review Panel in 2011, proudly saving the institution nearly $10 million. From 1996 to 2007 he was an outside legal construction counsel for the Los Angeles Unified School District, saving them more than $5 million, and spent 1988 to 2000 as an attorney for Bergman Dacey Goldsmith. A member of the American Bar Association, California State Bar and Los Angeles County Bar Association, Mr. Dacey writes and lectures on various issues including private and public works construction-related topics such as mechanic’s liens, bond claims, stop notices and surety claims and misuse of electronic data. He is also a trustee of the Association of Builders and Contractors and makes time to contribute to the Special Olympics, St. Thomas School, and Inner Circle Foster and Adoption Care.
For his immeasurable work throughout the years of his career, Mr. Dacey was named a California Super Lawyer in California Construction Law and honored on multiple occasions by the County of Los Angeles, the cities of Alhambra, Monterey Park and Rosemead, the California State Legislature and the U.S. Congress. In 2019, he was recognized as California’s Public Works Dispute Expert and Attorney and, in 2017, named a California Super Lawyer in Business Law. Additionally, Mr. Dacey received the African American Male Education and Development Award for his “Commitment, Leadership and Support of Higher Education for African American Students” in 2015, the Service to Education Award from the Alhambra Educational Foundation in 2013 and the Legacy Supporter Award from Black Women’s Lawyers Association of Los Angeles in 2012. Mr. Dacey attributes his success to his education, hard work, and pragmatism.
