Mr. O’Mara became involved in his profession because he knew in the 10th grade he wanted to be a lawyer. From that point forward, he never considered any other profession. He was motivated to pursue the field by his father, who was a lawyer. He respected him immensely and although he never encouraged him to be a lawyer, his conduct influenced him a lot. Mr. O’Mara started on his career path by earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Mississippi in 1962. From there, he continued with the University of Mississippi, receiving a Juris Doctorate in 1967. Upon completion of his degree, Mr. O’Mara was admitted to practice law in the state of Mississippi.

The highlight of Mr. O’Mara’s career was being the originator of the idea for a Mississippi Bankruptcy Conference of which he was also the president. He started his career in 1967 as a partner with Butler, Snow, O’Mara, Stevens & Cannada and remained on until 1997. During that time, he also served as the chairman of the firm from 1990 to 1997. He then became a senior partner for Phelps & Dunbar in 1997 and remains in that position to his day. While working as a lawyer, Mr. O’Mara became involved in the cattle industry by becoming the owner of Broadlawn Farm in 1997. He is raising registered Hereford cattle. He has devoted energy and time for years and would encourage other lawyers to have some activity outside of the law practice, because it’s a good diversion and is a benefit to have an outside activity. He is currently still running the farm. As a testament to his success, Mr. O’Mara has been inducted as a member to various esteemed organizations including but not limited to the Mississippi Bar Foundation, the American Bar Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute. He was named Mississippi Purebred Cattleman of the year in 2018 and has been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in America and the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the World.
