Richard Gabriel, Supreme Court Justice with the Colorado Supreme Court, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the legal profession.

With more than 30 years of professional experience to his credit, Mr. Gabriel has worked as a supreme court justice in the Colorado Supreme Court since 2015. He began his professional pursuits as a law clerk to the Hon. J. Frederick Motz in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, and subsequently worked as a city prosecutor for Lafayette, Colorado. Mr. Gabriel worked as an associate at Holme Roberts & Owen LLP from 1990 to 1994, rising to the rank of a partner, which he held until 2008. In addition, he worked in private practice from 1988 to 2008, and from 2008 to 2015 he served as a judge in the Colorado Court of Appeals. In addition to his primary pursuits, he has found success through his civic endeavors, contributing to the Colorado Bar Foundation as a fellow since 2003, the American Bar Foundation as a fellow since 2013 and the Colorado Lawyer journal as a column editor from 1992 to 2005, among others. He has also written myriad articles in the aforementioned journal, and has published numerous continuing education legal papers since 1990.

In preparation for his career, Mr. Gabriel attended Yale University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in American studies, cum laude, in 1984. He concluded his academic efforts at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he earned a JD in 1987. Following these achievements, he was admitted to practice law in the state of New York in 1987 and the state of Colorado in 1990, and has additionally been admitted to practice before numerous federal district courts and appellate courts, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Gabriel has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades in recognition of his career achievements, including receiving the Pursuit of Justice Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center in 2019, an Award of Merit from the Denver Bar Association in 2014 and was named Lawyer of the Year by Lawyers USA in 2007, among many more. Throughout his career, he has been thankful for the mentorship of Daniel S. Hoffman and Judge J. Frederick Motz, and he has always believed in the importance of taking the high road.
