Initially graduating from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts, Mr. Murphy proceeded to earn a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Creighton University in 1972. Subsequently certified to practice law in the states of Iowa and Nebraska, he would later represent cases before the United States District Court of the Northern District of Iowa, the United States District Court of Nebraska, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. From 1969 until 1971, Mr. Murphy completed service as a sergeant within the United States Army.
Upon his honorable discharge from the United States Army, Mr. Murphy found success as an assistant attorney for the county of Plymouth, Iowa. Alongside this role, he excelled as a partner at Murphy, Collins, Bixenman & McGill, PLC. Though he stepped down from the county of Plymouth in 1992, he continues to flourish as a partner for his law firm to this day. In recognition of his accomplishments, he has been consistently listed among the Outstanding Lawyers of America since 2003, and he has received an AV-Rating from Martindale-Hubbell. In 2019, Mr. Murphy was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
