S. Phillip Brown, Retired Superior Court Judge in the State of Georgia Superior Court, Macon Judicial Circuit, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the legal profession.
With 20 years of service as a superior court judge and more than 25 years of experience as an attorney, Mr. Brown established himself as an accomplished legal professional before his retirement in 2018. He worked as a judge for the State of Georgia Superior Court for the Macon Judicial Circuit from 1996 to 2016, previously practicing as a partner with the firm Brown, Katz, Flatau & Hasty in Macon, Georgia, from 1969 to 1995. Mr. Brown also contributed as an attorney and regional counsel for the Internal Revenue Service in New York for several years, garnering additional experience at various law firms and organizations.
In preparation for his career pursuits, Mr. Brown pursued an education at the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1967. In addition, he worked on the cooperative education program in civil engineering studies at Auburn University, and flourished through alternate quarter jobs with the civil engineering office of Southern Railway. After completing his degree, Mr. Brown was admitted to practice law by the State Bar of Georgia, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Brown served in the United States Army Reserve from 1960 to 1965, and additionally contributed as a representative with the Georgia House of Representatives from 1971 to 1974. He was recognized for his work as a Legislator of the Year, and has been the recipient of numerous further awards and accolades. He was presented with a Diamond Award in 2018 and was honored among the Top Attorneys of North America in 2017, 2018 and 2019 by Roundtable Magazine. As a testament to his success, Mr. Brown has been selected for inclusion in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in the World.
Among his myriad career highlights, Mr. Brown most fondly remembers working with the late Fred M. Hasty, a great man who was a district attorney and a partner of Brown, Katz, Flatau & Hasty. Together, they tried a case in which they received a not guilty verdict for an intensive care nurse who was accused of being responsible for the deaths of patients under her care. She was a black woman accused of the death of a white man in the south, but Mr. Brown and Mr. Hasty were able to escape the prejudice and give her a fair trial. Currently, he is writing a book about what he believes is wrong with religion and the reason for its decline. In his spare time, Mr. Brown also enjoys gardening and reading.
