Evan J. Spelfogel, Senior Counsel at Phillips Nizer LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in labor and employment law.
Mr. Spelfogel wanted to pursue law because he grew up surrounded by lawyers. His grandfather, father, and two uncles had all practiced together at a small law firm. With this in mind, he attended Harvard University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1956. Three years later, he earned a Juris Doctorate from Columbia University. Mr. Spelfogel then passed the Bar exam in both Massachusetts and New York and was additionally admitted into the United States Supreme Court in 1969. With his impressive credentials, he quickly found work and built an esteemed reputation based on his success through the years.
In 1964, Mr. Spelfogel began working as an associate at Simpson, Thatcher & Bartlett in New York City. He relocated to Dewey Ballantine to further his work as an associate from 1969 to 1977, before assuming the position of partner at Fellner, Rovins & Gallay. His achievements in his role took him to numerous other law firms in New York City, including Summit, Rovins & Feldesman and Epstein Becker and Green, Professional Corporation. Mr. Spelfogel is still excelling in his career today. He was brought onto Phillips Nizer, LLP as senior counsel in 2018.
Outside of his primary positions, Mr. Spelfogel spreads his knowledge through educating hopeful law students at Columbia University and Baruch College. He additionally lectures periodically at St. Johns University, Southern Methodist University, Boston University, and the University of Washington. To Mr. Spelfogel, mentoring young lawyers is one of the most enjoyable aspects of his work.
Mr. Spelfogel’s professional successes have qualified him to receive numerous honors. In 2017, he was made a fellow of the New York State Bar Foundation. From 2006 until 2018, he was selected for inclusion in the Super Lawyers New York Edition for employment and labor. Furthermore, he has been recognized 24 times from 1995 until 2019 by the Best Lawyers in America in the area of labor law and management. In the next five years, he plans to continue with his practice. He cannot imagine himself doing anything else, as he has a genuine love for his work. In recognition of his extensive achievements, Mr. Spelfogel was awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
