In preparation for his career, Mr. Barnes attended Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in accounting in 1965 and a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1966. In 1972, he concluded his academic pursuits at Wayne State University, graduating with a JD, and was admitted to the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, as well as the State Bar of Michigan. Mr. Barnes was admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 1974, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana in 1994 and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 1995. From 1972 to 2010, he worked as a partner at Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt and Howlett, and additionally was a full-time arbitrator with the Michigan Employment Relations Commission.

Mr. Barnes worked as the editor-in-chief of the Wayne Law Review and contributed numerous articles to professional journals. He was named a Leading Michigan Lawyers by Chambers, one of Michigan’s 100 Super Lawyers by the Best Lawyers in America, and was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Bar Labor Section. Mr. Barnes is a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, as well as a member of the American Bar Association, the Michigan Bar Association and the Grand Rapids Bar Association. As a further testament to his success, experience and stature, he has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in the World.
