With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Lauter has been a partner with Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard and Smith, LLP, since 2015, having been an equity partner and practice group leader with Freeborn and Peters, LLP, since 2008. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a partner with McBride, Baker, and Coles from 1995 to 1996 and Lauter and Associates, Ltd., from 1991 to 1996, and he was the director of economic development for Chicago United from 1990 to 1991. He previously served as an associate attorney with Schwartz, Cooper, Kolb, and Gaynor form 1987 to 1990, with Stinson, Mag, and Fizzell from 1986 to 1987, and he was an assistant attorney with Mayer, Brown, and Platt from 1983 to 1986. Earlier in his career, he was a law clerk for the Honorable Richard L. Merrick of the United States Bankruptcy Court of Illinois from 1981 to 1982.
Mr. Lauter first pursued an education with the University of Kansas, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government in 1975. He continued his studies with the Northern Illinois University College of Law, earning a JD in 1981. He later joined Loyola University Chicago, earning a Master of Social Work in clinical and medical social work in 2018. He has been admitted to practice in the states of Illinois and Missouri, as well as before the United States District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois and the Western District of Missouri, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the United States Bankruptcy Courts for the Western District of Missouri, the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the Eastern District of Michigan, the Northern District of Illinois, and the District of Colorado. Throughout his career, Mr. Lauter has been recognized for his contributions. Chambers USA named him a Band 4, an Illinois Leading Lawyer for Bankruptcy, and among America’s Leading Lawyers for Business-Bankruptcy/Restructuring Practices. The recipient of the Turnaround Atlas Award for the Chapter 11 Reorganization Deal of the Year from Small Mid Markets, he has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who’s Who in American Law.
