James L. Shea, Chairman Emeritus and Attorney at Venable LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership.
Inspired by his maternal grandfather, who was a lawyer and a judge, Mr. Shea knew that he, too, would enter the field of law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Princeton University, graduating cum laude in 1974, and a JD from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1977. He was admitted to practice law by the District of Columbia and the Maryland bars in 1977, and worked under Judge Joseph H. Young in the U. S. District Court for the District of Maryland from 1977 to 1978, as well as for the Assistant Attorney General of Maryland from 1981 to 1983. Mr. Shea then became a managing partner with Venable LLP in 1994 and held this role until 2006, at which point he assumed the role of attorney and the title of chairman emeritus. He considers his time as managing partner with the firm to be a career highlight and his glad to still be practicing with Venable LLP.
In addition to his primary pursuits, Mr. Shea has been a chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland, as well as chair of the Central Maryland Transportation Alliance, Empower Baltimore Management Corporation, and Downtown Partnership of Baltimore. He has been a board member of the Mercantile Bank Shares and Mercantile Bank & Trust, the Greater Baltimore Committee and the Equal Justice Council. Additionally, Mr. Shea has been a trustee of the Hippodrome Foundation, and the Calvert School as well as a cornerstone partner of the Legal Aid Bureau. He would like to continue contributing to the community and pursuing his clients’ interests with integrity and effectiveness.
