Mr. Suhr immigrated to the United States in 1966, and followed his American Dream with his academic pursuits, attending Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. He continued his academic pursuits at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, graduating with a Master of Arts in 1970, and transitioned to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After receiving a Master of Science in 1975, Mr. Suhr began his career as a bibliographer at the State Library of North Carolina in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he garnered experience for three years.
In 1978, Mr. Suhr became the director of the Pender County Public Library, and in 1980, he accepted a position as a librarian at North Carolina State University, which he held until 1985. He completed his legal education at North Carolina Central University, earning a JD in 1988, and in 1989, he was admitted to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Middle Districts of North Carolina. Mr. Suhr began serving as an attorney at his own private practice, the Law Offices of Paul A. Suhr PLLC, where he continues to work to this day. His company operates out of both Raleigh and Fayetteville, and since founding the firm, he has been additionally licensed to practice law by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1992, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in 2008 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011.
In addition to his primary professional pursuits, Mr. Suhr is proud to have devoted himself to serving his community. He has been involved in volunteer programs which created opportunities for minority high school students, and was a grantee of the North Carolina Humanities Committee from 1979 to 1980. Mr. Suhr acted as a member of the Human Resources and Human Relations Advisory Commission of Raleigh, North Carolina from 1990 to 1995, during which he acted as the organization’s chairman from 1994 to 1995. He recalls as a highlight of his career a case in which he was able to obtain an approved release for a victim of parental abuse, and was also proud to secure a legal adoption which reunited a grandmother with her five-month-old grandchild, against an initial refusal by the U.S. immigration system.
Throughout his career, Mr. Suhr has maintained affiliation with multiple professional organizations. He is a member of the North Carolina Trial Lawyers Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice and the American Bar Association. He additionally served the Wake County Bar Association as a member of the board of directors in three different terms between 1996 between 2013. As a further testament to his success, Mr. Suhr has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in the World.
