William Murphy, Attorney, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in civil trial and appeals law.

Mr. Murphy attended the University of Scranton, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in 1973. He continued to prepare for his career at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a JD in 1976, and has been licensed to practice law in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the Third Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. Mr. Murphy was admitted to practice in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1976 to 1979, and began as an assistant professor of law at St. John’s University (SJU) in Queens, New York, where he rose to the rank of associate professor. In 1982, he worked as an attorney at Beasley, Casey, Colleran, Erbstein, Thistle, Kline & Murphy, spent one more year as an associate professor at SJU, and returned to the firm, where he remained from 1984 to 1989.

In 1989, Mr. Murphy began practicing law in his own private practice, where he remained until 1994, when he started as a legal editor at Pennsylvania Law Weekly. He served as editor-in-chief of the publication from 1995 to 1996, and returned to his private practice in Philadelphia, where he continues to practice law to this day. In addition to his work at SJU, Mr. Murphy served as an instructor for Temple University from 1987 to 1988, and since 1989, he has been a member of the continuing legal education faculty at the Pennsylvania Bar Institute. He has leveraged his knowledge and experience as a columnist, publishing five scholarly law review articles, and as a testament to his record of integrity, scholarship, and legal excellence, he has been named an AV Preeminent Lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Murphy is a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar, and in 2016, he became a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. In the coming years, he plans to focus on libel law and its implications on the first amendment.
