Following the family custom, Mr. Keene was inspired to join the military, as well as become an advocate for veterans. He pursued an education at the United States Military Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1976. In the same year, Mr. Keene joined the United States Army and retired from service as a lieutenant colonel in 1995. He graduated from Harvard University with a Master of Public Administration in 1984. In 1998, he obtained a JD from New York University and became licensed to practice law in New York State in 1999.
While in the military, Mr. Keene served as an assistant professor and instructor at the United States Military Academy from 1984 to 1987, as an assistant army attache for the United States Embassy in Beijing from 1988 to 1990, as a member of the policy planning staff for the United States Department of State from 1990 to 1994, and as a policy analyst for the Office of Science & Technology Policy in The White House from 1994 to 1995. As an attorney, Mr. Keene served as an associate at Linklaters from 1998 to 1999 and as an associate at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, from 1999 to 2001.
Between 2002 and 2017, Mr. Keene held positions as an associate at Wollmuth Maher & Deutsch, a vice president and associate general counsel at Goldman, Sachs & Co, the executive vice president and chief compliance officer at MoneyGram International, a court-appointed corporate compliance monitor, a managing director at Kroll Associates, Incorporated, and as a senior ethics officer for the United Nations. Currently, he is an attorney at the law firm he founded, the Law Office of Lonnie S. Keene. He is an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Organization of Veterans’ Advocates.
Mr. Keene is extremely passionate about advocating for veterans. Mr. Keene is accredited by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as an attorney authorized to represent veterans seeking disability benefits from the Department. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. Notably, he received the Legion of Merit for his service in the U.S. Army, and was selected as an Olmsted Scholar by the George and Carol Olmsted Foundation, becoming the first Olmsted Scholar to study in mainland China at the University of Beijing. As a testament to his success, Mr. Keene has been featured in the 36th and 37th editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest, as well as in multiple editions of Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World.
