Alan Ma, Lawyer and Principal of the Law Offices of Alan W. C. Ma, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in immigration law.
Mr. Ma prepared for his legal career at the University of Hawaii, earning a BBA in 1975, and continued his academic pursuits at Chaminade University. After graduating with an MBA in 1981, he transitioned to Golden Gate University and earned a JD in 1983. Mr. Ma was licensed to practice law in the state of Hawaii in 1984, and began working as a partner at Oldenberg & Ma in Honolulu. In 1986, he was licensed to practice law by the Ninth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals, and in 1989, he was licensed to practice by the United States Supreme Court.
In 1990, Mr. Ma left Oldenberg & Ma to start as the principal of his firm, the Law Offices of Alan W. C. Ma. He worked as a solo practitioner until 1995, when he started working as counsel at Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. In 1999, he returned to solo practice, and has worked at his firm ever since. As a first-generation immigrant from a second-generation mother, Mr. Ma was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Hawaii. He witnessed significant unfairness and realized the need for quality legal representation in the world. After earning a scholarship in 1980, he finished law school in under three years and began his career as a lawyer.
In addition to his work as a lawyer, Mr. Ma has published a variety of written works. In 1990, he co-edited “New Waves for Foreign Investors” and in 2007, he co-authored “Real Estate Investment and Practices in the USA.” He has also published short stories and has even done some screenplay writing. He leveraged his experience and legal knowledge as an educator at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, where he served as an adjunct professor of law from 1988 to 1995. In 1995, Mr. Ma served as a trade representative for the State of Hawaii in Hong Kong and China.
For his excellence and service, Mr. Ma has been recognized with myriad awards. In 1990, he received an Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Hawaii Community Service Council, and since 1993, he has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Ma is most proud of being nominated as one of the Pro Bono Lawyers of the Year in the State of Hawaii for his contributions to the immigrant community, and he has maintained affiliations with multiple professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the International Bar Association, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association, and the U.S. Japan Volunteer Association.
