Merlyn Anderson, Lawyer and City Attorney, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the legal profession.

Mr. Anderson studied at Yankton College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. He continued his education at the University of South Dakota (USD), where he earned a Master of Arts in educational psychology in 1965. From 1967 to 1968, he worked as a guidance counselor at Freeman Public Schools and served briefly as a social worker for the South Dakota Department of Welfare from 1968 to 1969. Following his work in educational psychology, Mr. Anderson decided to pursue a career in law, graduating from USD with a JD in 1972. The same year, he was admitted to practice law in the states of Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa.

Mr. Anderson briefly worked as a lawyer at Frank Vladyka Law Offices in 1972. From 1973 to 1979, he worked as a lawyer at Roy K. Rietz Law Offices, as well as took on an additional role as a city attorney in 1974. In 1979, he transitioned to a county attorney role for Murray County, Minnesota, which he held until 1995, and in the same year, he additionally began working as a solo law practitioner. He currently continues his work as both a city attorney and solo practitioner.

Prior to his involvement in the field of law, Mr. Anderson dedicated himself to military service. As a young man, he served in the United States Army in active duty from 1966 until 1967, when he received an honorable discharge. From 1968 to 1972, he served in the South Dakota Army National Guard Military Band, and from 1991 to 2005, he was a member of the United States Army Reserve. Mr. Anderson served as a member of the Lesterville Volunteer Fire Department from 1969 to 1978, acting as secretary of the fire department from 1972 to 1978, and serving as mayor and councilman of the Town of Lesterville in the same period.

Mr. Anderson is a member of the American Bar Association and Minnesota Bar Association, and he acted as a bank attorney for Murray County State Bank from 1979 to 2014. He cites his first boss, Roy K. Rietz, as a positive influence and mentor in his career. As a testament to his success and experience as an attorney, Mr. Anderson has been included in multiple editions of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who in America.
