James Kenney, Senior Judge, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in land use and real estate law.
Mr. Kenney attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. He continued his education as a postgraduate at Yale Divinity School from 1959 to 1960, then studied law at George Washington University in Washington, DC, where he earned a JD in 1963. The same year, Mr. Kenney was licensed to practice law in the Court of Appeals of Maryland and began working as an associate with Barco Cook Patton (now Squire Patton Boggs). In 1964, he was admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and became an assistant to the States Attorney for St. Mary’s County. In 1965, Mr. Kenney was licensed to practice in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. He started working as a partner at Briscoe Kenney and Successors in 1966, where he worked for more than 30 years, until 1997.
During his tenure at Briscoe Kenney and Successors, Mr. Kenney was admitted to practice law in the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1974 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1977. Upon his departure from the firm in 1997, he accepted a role as a judge in the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland, where he worked for a decade, until 2007. In the later years of his career as a judge, he served as a member of the Judicial Ethics Committee of Maryland. Since 2016, he has served on the Maryland Judicial Council, both on the board, and as the chair of the senior judge committee. In conjunction with his legal career, Mr. Kenney has worked as an adjunct professor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland since 1964 and has contributed to multiple professional journals. For his excellence as a legal professional, he received a Leadership in Law Award from the Daily Record in 2003. As a further testament to his success and stature, he has been featured in the 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of Who’s Who in American Law.
