Mr. Long studied at Columbia University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. He continued his higher education at the University of Virginia School of Law, earning a JD in 1963, and was licensed to practice law in the state of Alabama. In addition, he is licensed to practice law in the U.S. District Court for the Northern, Southern, and Middle Districts of Alabama, as well as the 11th and Fifth Circuits of the U. S. Court of Appeals, and the U. S. Supreme Court. Mr. Long worked as an associate attorney at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP from 1963 to 1970, when he became a partner at the firm. He remained with the firm for more than 45 years, until he started Thad Long Legal Services in 2011. Since 2014, he has worked in his own private legal practice. He specializes in intellectual property and patent law and is a registered member of the Patent Bar.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Mr. Long served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAGC), rising to the rank of captain before his honorable discharge. He represented Goodrich Tires in an exploding tire case, arguing that the tire was worn out and unfit to be on the road at more than 60,000 miles of use. He won the case, without a precedent for any case like it. He is a fellow of the Alabama Law Foundation and is a member of many legal organizations, including the Alabama Bar Association, the American Law Institute, and the International Trademark Association. He co-authored “Unfair Competition Under Alabama Law” in 1990, and served as a member of the editorial board for The Trademark Reporter from 1994 to 2007. As a testament to his experience, success, and stature as a legal professional, Mr. Long has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, and Who’s Who in America.
