Prior to his education, Mr. Boes served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960, rising to the rank of corporal before his honorable discharge. He returned home and studied at Columbia College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1961, and continued his education at Columbia University Law School, earning a JD in 1964. In his last year of study, Mr. Boes worked as a review editor for the Columbia Law Review, and following his graduation, he worked as a law clerk in the 2nd Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals. In 1965, he started as an associate at Reavis & McGrath, where he rose to the rank of a partner in 1971. He remained at the firm until 1988, when he transitioned to a role as a partner with Nordon Rose Fulbright and Jaworski LLP, working there for more than a decade before he took on the title of retired partner in 2001.

In 2001, Mr. Boes started working at his own private legal practice, the Law Office of Lawrence W. Boes, where he continues to work to this day. He is licensed to practice law in the State of New York, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the second, third, eighth, and ninth circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition to his work as a legal professional, Mr. Boes has served on the Code Review Commission of the Village of Westbury since 1983, and has served as chairman since 1991. He was a trustee of the Westbury Memorial Public Library from 2002 to 2007, and is a member of a variety of professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the Bar Association of Nassau County.
