Mark E. Heath, Attorney and Member at Spilman, Thomas & Battle PLLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the legal profession.
As a student, Mr. Heath attended Western Kentucky University, earning a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in journalism and history in 1983. He continued his education at the University of Kentucky College of Law, earning a JD in 1986, and enlisted in the United States Army in 1987, where he rose to the rank of captain before his honorable discharge in 1990. For his service, he was awarded an Army Commendation Medal, and was named to the Commandant’s List in the 112th class at the Judge Advocate General’s Corps School in Charlottesville, Virginia. Upon his return to civilian life, Mr. Heath started working at Smith, Heenan & Althen (later Heenan, Althen & Roles), where he became a member and spent more than a decade, remaining with the firm until 2002. In 2003, he became a member at Spilman, Thomas & Battle PLLC, where he continues to practice to this day and serves as co-chair of the firm’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) practice groups.
Mr. Heath is active in the American Bar Association’s Section of Labor and Employment and its Occupational Safety and Health Law Committee. He was in the section’s 2016 Leadership Development Class, serves as the employer co-chair of the section’s Pro Bono and Community Outreach Committee and is one of the section’s liaisons to the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service. He is a frequent speaker on safety and employment law topics and is an associate board member of the Kentucky Coal Association, a member of the Safety Committee of the West Virginia Coal Association, and a trustee of the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation.
Mr. Heath is licensed to practice law in the states of West Virginia and Kentucky, the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Kentucky, the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky, and the Fourth and Sixth Circuits of the U.S. Courts of Appeals. For his excellence as an attorney, Mr. Heath has been the recipient of myriad awards, including being named to Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business in Labor & Employment and being recognized by his peers in The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Energy Law. As a further testament to his success, he has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in America.
