Inspired by his father’s love of the law and unfulfilled dream of becoming a lawyer, Mr. Smith decided to pursue a legal career. He attended Mount St. Mary’s University, earning a Bachelor of Science in history and political science in 1964. He went on to study at Cornell University, earning a Master of Science in labor law and industrial relations in 1966, and finally earned a JD from Georgetown University Law Centre in 1972. After his graduation, Mr. Smith started as a senior partner for Morgan Lewis, where he practiced for over 40 years until his departure in 2014. He founded RJSmith Legal Counselors PLLC, and has worked as chairman ever since. In 2018, Mr. Smith was awarded an honorary doctorate from Mount St. Mary’s University, and he is licensed to practice law in Virginia, Florida, and the District of Columbia.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Mr. Smith is an active member of his community. He has served on the board for Mount St. Mary’s and Paul VI High School since 2015, and worked on the board of managers for the Virginia Catholic Conference from 2006 to 2018. He has also been a member of the human resource committee for the Order of Malta since 1999. Mr. Smith has been recognized for his achievements as a lawyer with a variety of awards, including being named to the Best Lawyers in America since 2001, the Super Lawyers in the Washington D.C. Area in 2015, and was listed in Chambers USA as America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. He became a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers in 1998, and in the coming years, he aims to continue working for a number of not-for-profit organizations. He has stopped recruiting clients, only taking them on when his assistance is directly sought out, preferring to focus on his service to the community.
