Mr. Gillespie studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1977. He continued his education at the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and earned a JD in 1980. After graduation, he was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar, and started as a partner at Neaves & Gillespie PA, where he works to this day. Mr. Gillespie was admitted to practice by the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina in 1982, the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina in 1983, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1984. For his work as an attorney, he was recognized as one of the Ten Best Family Law Attorneys for Client Satisfaction by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys in 2017.

Mr. Gillespie always had the drive to help people—he told his parents he wanted to be a lawyer when he was 5 years old. Through the course of his career, he had several mentors, including his pastor Roy Deck, and a banker named D.F. Folger Jr. He credits David Winger and Charles M. Neaves as mentors in his legal career. In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Gillespie has been an active member of his community. From 1983 to 1985, he served as the commissioner for the town of Jonesville, North Carolina, and from 1987 to 1991, he was a member of the executive committee of the Northwest Piedmont Council of Governments. From 1985 to 1993, he was the mayor of the town of Jonesville. Mr. Gillespie’s service, experience, and success as an attorney solidify his status as a top legal professional.
