David Hayes, Law Clerk at the United States District Court for the Western District of New York, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the legal profession.
Mr. Hayes earned a Bachelor of Arts from Howard University in 1985, and a JD from Yale University in 1988. He worked as an associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison before he was licensed to practice law in the state of New York in 1989. He worked as a law clerk for the second circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals for a year, and in 1991, he was licensed to practice law in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York. He worked as an associate for Phillips Lytle LLP starting in 1991, and in 1995, he was licensed to practice law in the second circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals. Mr. Hayes started as assistant corporation counsel for the city of Buffalo, where he worked until 2004. He then began working as a law clerk to U.S. Magistrate Judge Hugh Scott at the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, and has worked there ever since.
As a young man, Mr. Hayes was always interested in the law—in his public school career, he gravitated towards social studies and the sciences. He finds the most rewarding part of his career to be solving complex legal questions, applying the law, and working a diverse caseload. His current boss, Judge Hugh Scott, was Mr. Hayes’ mentor in his legal career, and he strives to give back to the next generation by mentoring them and trying to instill strong values. Mr. Hayes has been recognized with several awards, including the Minority Bar Association of Western New York Legal Service Award in 1999, and several awards for volunteerism in the Boy Scouts of America. As a testament to his success, experience, and service to the legal profession, he has been featured in the 10th and 13th editions of Who’s Who in American Law, and the 59th edition of Who’s Who in America.
