Robert W. “Joe” Bishop, Esq., the president and founder of Bishop Friend PSC, has focused his practice in recent years on employment law, contracts and class action litigation. He and his firm have worked on numerous employment cases and class actions involving varied subject matters, including antitrust, securities, personal injury, products liability, consumer protection, ERISA, wage and hour, and civil rights. Mr. Bishop is a life member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. He also has been selected to the Kentucky Super Lawyers List every year since 2012.
Mr. Bishop was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Growing up in a military family, his childhood years were marked by travel, both abroad and within the United States, from Clark Air Force base in the Philippines to the suburbs of London, to the Washington, D.C., area. He attended Wallop Boys School in Surrey, England, and graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington, Virginia, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, earned athletic letters in soccer and tennis, and was captain of the tennis team. He attended Duke University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and earned a letter in soccer. He also attended the National Law Center at George Washington University, and the University of Kentucky, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the College of Law, graduating Order of the Coif.
Mr. Bishop was admitted to practice law in 1976 in Ohio, hired out of the University of Kentucky law school by one of the ten largest law firms in the country, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, in Cleveland, Ohio. He returned to and was admitted to practice in Kentucky in 1981, among other things in order to work on an antitrust case in which his firm were lead counsel for the governmental entities. Mr. Bishop was chairman of the Federal Practice Section of the Louisville Bar Association. He has been lead counsel in many noteworthy cases, with verdicts, judgments and settlements on behalf of joined plaintiffs, individual plaintiffs, and both opt-in and opt-out plaintiffs in class actions.
Mr. Bishop is admitted to United States District Courts in Kentucky, Ohio and Texas; the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th United States Circuit Courts of Appeal; and the Supreme Court of the United States. He is a member of the Federal, Kentucky, and Louisville bar associations, and was active in his community in the city of Louisville as a coach, and as a board member of the Louisville Central Community Centers. His enjoyment of watching, playing and coaching soccer led Mr. Bishop to become an officer and director of the Greater Louisville Soccer League, and one of the original founders, owners, officers and board members of the Louisville Thunder Professional Indoor Soccer Team.
A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Bishop has also been featured in approximately 25 editions of Who’s Who, including Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in the World. For his leadership and contributions, he has also been named the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mr. Bishop has been married to and in love with his wife and best friend, Cynthia Graham Bishop, for nearly 50 years. Together they are the proud parents of Jessica Levesque, Joshua Davis Bishop, Amanda Joyce Bishop and Alexandra Kelt Bishop, all of whom are college graduates, three of whom have obtained one or more graduate degrees, and all of whom are successfully pursuing postgraduate careers in business, science, humanitarian ventures and/or the arts. Cynthia and Joe are also the doting grandparents of four grandchildren, Ganyon, Torin, Freyja and Dot.
Outside of his work in the courtroom, Mr. Bishop has enjoyed climbing, rowing, sailing, cycling, hiking, hanging out with his family and friends and reading. Looking towards the future, he, together with his law partners, hope to continue to expand their firm’s class action practice and employment work within Kentucky and across the country.
