Ms. Marquardt began her education at Albion College, where she studied French language and education. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in 1972, taught school for several years and continued her education at the University of Michigan. She earned a Master of Arts in education in 1977 and then decided to go to law school and pursue her JD. In 1986, she graduated with a JD, cum laude, from Wayne State University Law School. She was licensed to practice law in the state of Michigan in 1986, and in the same year, she was licensed to practice law by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
In 1994, she became an originating member of DeMent and Marquardt, PLC, a position she holds to this day. With her fellow members and associates, Ms. Marquardt offers planning for charitable giving, wills, trusts, guardianships, and more. She specializes in estate planning, and has been listed in Michigan SuperLawyers for Estate Planning from 2007 to 2019. In addition, she was named in the Top Women Attorneys in Michigan by Hour Detroit, from 2017 to 2019, and was named as one of the Top 100 Attorneys in the U.S. by Worth Magazine for 2006, 2007, and 2008. She is a fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel, and a member of the American Bar Association, the Real Property and Probate Sections of the State Bar of Michigan, and the Kalamazoo County Bar Association.
Ms. Marquardt’s pursuit of estate planning as her specialty grew from her love of problem-solving for people. She values connections, and the personal nature of estate planning attracted her, giving her an opportunity to use her professional skills in a positive way. Her clients seek legal counsel as a proactive measure, and she works with them to create the best solution for each individual family. She feels her experience as an educator has been a valuable benefit to her legal profession, as estate planning often involves educating the client about the law. She values integrity above all else—the clients’ needs are first and foremost.
Through her career, Ms. Marquardt has leveraged her knowledge and experience in myriad published works. She co-authored “Estate Administration in Michigan” for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education in the State of Michigan, “Incentive Trusts? Beware!” in the Estate, Gifts, and Trusts Journal, and “Share Loan Financing for the Cooperative Member” in the Michigan Real Property Review, among multiple other published works. As a testament to her remarkable career, experience, and dedication, Ms. Marquardt has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in American Law, and Who’s Who in America.
