Michael J. Leech, Mediator and Principal at Talk Sense Mediation and Michael J. Leech P.C., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mediation and arbitration law.
Mr. Leech began his higher education career at the University of Virginia, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history, with distinction, in 1973. He then attended the University of Virginia School of Law and earned a JD in 1976. Following his graduation, Mr. Leech was admitted to the Illinois state bar, and was licensed to practice law in the state of Illinois. He started doing corporate finance work as an associate at Chapman and Cutler LLP in 1976, where he remained until 1978. He transitioned to Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, where he practiced in commercial litigation and employment law. He was an associate attorney from 1978 to 1983 and was a partner for more than 25 years, from 1983 until 2011. He became licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania in 2015.
In 1996, Mr. Leech started his career as a mediator. Prior to his mediation work, he was exclusively a trial lawyer, handling commercial and employment cases. His deepest passion now is finding solutions to difficult issues and reaching a compromise, or even a win-win outcome, between two parties. In 2005, he was recognized as a certified mediator by the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. In his extensive record of over 450 mediations, he has achieved an approximately 90% rate of settlements.
Talk Sense Mediation was founded in 2012, when Mr. Leech became a full-time neutral. He uses his skills as a mediator to handle cases in many areas, including commercial litigation, employment cases, trade secret disputes, class action suits, and internal corporate disputes, among others. As a neutral mediator, he aims to reach an amicable agreement between both parties, managing the negotiation process and intervening to help overcome obstacles, or help people look at the dispute in a different way or to better understand their legal risks. Mr. Leech also acts as an arbitrator, where he decides cases rather than attempting to achieve a settlement.
Mr. Leech has published several books and articles in his career, including the legal textbook “Employment Termination: Rights and Remedies” in 1985, “Abolishing Discrimination Law: A Foolish & Dangerous Policy” in 1995, and “How Did You Do That? Trade Secrets of a Mediator” in 2004. Mr. Leech was awarded the Brusche Award, the organization’s highest honor, by the Association of Attorney-Mediators in 2017. He was named a Top 100 Illinois Super Lawyer in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and has served as a mediator and arbitrator panelist of the American Arbitration Association in employment and commercial cases. He is a distinguished fellow of the International Academy of Mediators, a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a fellow of the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers. Mr. Leech’s experience, dedication, and excellence in mediation solidify his status as an elite member of the legal profession.
