Otis O’Connor, Retired Lawyer and Director at Steptoe & Johnson, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of banking, real estate affairs, and real estate planning.
Inspired by his father who was a lawyer, Mr. O’Connor decided to follow in his footsteps by attending Princeton University and earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. Soon thereafter, he graduated from Harvard University with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1963, and further secured a Master of Business Administration from Marshall University’s South Charleston Campus in 1979. During his time at Harvard, Mr. O’Connor had served as an associate with Steptoe & Johnson for six years before becoming partner in 1969. In addition to his primary endeavors, he served as president of Daymark Inc., for a year. He went on to receive a Master of Arts from the Trinity Theological Seminary in 2006 and later retired from Stepson & Johnson in 2008.
Civically, Mr. O’Connor completed service in the United States Navy and the United States Naval Reserve between 1957 and 1981. The past director of several boards, he is particularly proud of his contributions to City National Bank. Mr. O’Connor was instrumental in forming the bank’s holding company and assisting in their transition to a unit bank from a branch bank. Additionally, he played an important role in the development of the Charleston Area Medical Center. To remain aware of current legal trends, Mr. O’Connor maintains affiliation with the American Bar Association, the West Virginia Bar Association, the Kanawha County Bar Association, and the Reserve Officers Association. The advice that Mr. O’Connor offers the next generation of aspiring lawyers and attorneys is to work hard and be prepared to learn and adapt to new laws. As a testament to his success, Mr. O’Connor has been lauded with an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Award and has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, and Who’s Who in the World.
